Direct Service

All of our direct service opportunities are coordinated by members of the congregation.  If you would like to initiate a new volunteer partnership or to sign up for one of the projects below, please contact the Education office (215-627-6747 x22).

Bethesda Broad
contact: Stef Zeis: 856-751-1862
The Bethesda Project strives to be a premier provider of housing and services to the poor in Philadelphia by serving them with quality and integrity. Rodeph Shalom congregants go to Bethesda Broad (located at Broad & Brown Streets) on the second Sunday of each month to cook and serve breakfast.

Habitat for Humanity
contact: Dan Seltzer
Habitat for Humanity is an international organization devoted to building affordable housing for the economically disadvantaged. If you are interested in being notified of volunteer opportunities with Habitat Philadelphia, please provide your email address or phone number to Dan Seltzer. Don your hard hats and help rebuild our community, one house at a time.

Jefferson & Pennsylvania Hospital Challah Delivery
contact: Joanne Gotto: 215-735-5318 (home), 215-955-8769 (work)
Each Friday afternoon, RS volunteers join the Center City Kehillah volunteers in visiting Jewish patients at both Jefferson and Pennsylvania hospitals and delivering Challah for Shabbat. The patients greatly appreciate this connection from the Jewish community. Volunteers will be asked to produce or obtain their immunization records. Contact Susan Stanek at the Federation at: sstanek@philafederation.org or 215-832-0597. Susan will walk volunteers through the certification process.

Jewish Relief Agency
contact: Jill Pinover: 215-248-9503
The Jewish Relief Agency provides food once a month to people in need. The food is packaged in the northeast and delivered directly to homes by a cadre of volunteers. It is a great opportunity for your family to pack and deliver food to needy families within the Jewish community.

MANNA
contact: Estelle Maisel: 215-722-2857
MANNA provides nutritious meals and nutrition counseling to individuals who are homebound and living with HIV/AIDS in the Greater Philadelphia area. There are volunteer opportunities available in the kitchen, distribution and delivery as well as helping out at special events and holidays.

Chanukah Week of Giving &
Martin Luther King Day of Service
contact: Ellen Teplick: 215-483-4745
During Chanukah and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, RS congregants spread out into the community and perform mitzvot. We paint classrooms, visit residents in nursing homes and hospitals, volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and more. Watch the RS Bulletin for a listing of the volunteer opportunities.

MENTOR
Mitzvah, Encourage, Nurture, Tutor, Outreach, Reassure
contact: Sharon Spinrad: 215-735-0797
The MENTOR program matches volunteers to students in Kearny Elementary (6th & Fairmount Streets) and Childs Elementary (17th & Tasker Streets). The volunteers are assigned one or two 2nd - 6th grade students, with whom they meet weekly, spending 45 minutes with the child. This concentrated time with one individual has proven to elevate the students’ self-confidence and allow them to become more receptive to learning. The focus of the time is spent on reading, writing and math, if the volunteer is comfortable working in those areas.
Mentoring takes place at Kearny on Monday and Wednesday mornings and at the Childs School on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Volunteers pick a specific school, day, and time period
